Wikipedia adalah perpustakaan terbesar dan terlengkap di dunia. Ia memang tidak dalam wujud fisik, tapi dalam wujud sebuah situs internet.
Disbutkan bahwa Wikipedia berhasil dalam satu dekade untuk menjadi akses bagi kumpulan berbagai jenis ilmu di dunia, hal yang gagal dilakukan oleh perpustakaan Alexandria selama dua ribu tahun.
Wikipedia merupakan ensiklopedia yang penggarapannya dimulai pada tahun 2001 dengan versi bahasa indonesianya tersedia pada tahun 2003. Memang, artikel-artikel di Wikipedia merupakan hasil kerjasamana dari para relawan yang tersebar di seluruh muka bumi ini. Situs jenis ini biasa disebut sebagai situs wiki, arti wiki adalah siapapun bisa mengedit artikel tersebut, memperbaiki dan menambahkan informasinya.
Inilah yang membuat wikipedia menjadi besar. Wikipedia ini gratis dan dikerjakan secara gotong-royong. Gotong royong yang juga merupakan tradisi Indonesia ternyata bisa digunakan untuk membangun sebuah lembaga informasi yang sedemikian lengkap.
Wikipedia memang dikerjakan secara keroyokan. Inilah kekurangannya, ada beberapa dosen pembimbing tulisan ilmiah yang melarang kutipan dari wikipedia. Beberapa orang memang masih meragukan kredibilitasnya.
Tapi, sebenarnya menurut saya usaha wikipedia untuk menjaga kualitanya sudah sangat baik. Lihat saja artikel-artikel wikipedia. Mereka meminta referensi untuk sebuah kutipan. Dan ini tentu saja bisa di trace. Kalau tidak mau atau tidak boleh memakai referensi dari wikipedia, kita bisa mencari ke sumber aslinya.
